MultiLink Configurations Top

MultiLink is configured according to the method a computer uses to monitor the status of a UPS, either through an SNMP card or by a direct cable connection to the serial port. The software is designed to monitor any part of a network. Its functionality permits it to monitor any Sola/Hevi-Duty UPS that can be contacted via serial cable, contact closure, an Ethernet or the Internet, but the software’s functionality does not require networked computers and UPSs.

Configure MultiLink according to the type of connection between the computer and UPS. The various methods are shown in Figures 1, 2, and 3.

Cable Connections Top

Figure 1 below shows the simplest possible MultiLink installation. MultiLink can be configured to monitor the UPS and, if utility power fails or another problem arises, MultiLink can notify Computer #1 and personnel about the problem. In the event of a serious power problem, MultiLink can be configured to prompt the shutdown of Computer #1’s operating system.

Figure 1: Direct cable connection

Figure 2 shows the same type of serial connection to a computer on a network (Computer 1). With either serial communications or a contact closure connection, MultiLink can send notifications to all computers (Computers #2-5) on a network (These computers must be running MultiLink). With a MultiLink Network Shutdown License on Computer #1, MultiLink can send notifications to those computers when needed.

SNMP Connection Top

Figure 3 shows one example of a UPS with an SNMP connection. Any computer running MultiLink can monitor the status of the UPS and send notifications to the other computers. Some SNMP cards impose a limit on the number of computers that can receive notifications.

Monitoring with Multiple Types of Connections Top

A computer can be set up to monitor and control more than one UPS, including UPS models requiring different types of connections. For example, with network connections and the appropriate upgrade licenses, any computer in Figures 1, 2 and 3 could monitor the status of any UPS on the network and send notifications to other computers, allowing them to shut down if needed.

A computer can receive alerts from only one UPS, but can monitor the status of any UPS on a network.

Figure 4 shows possible interconnections of host computers, targeted clients and UPS models with varying connections. In this figure, any computer can be configured to monitor any UPS or MultiLink installation.
